Big Wok!!!

Sometimes, having to crave my desperation for chinese food, we would go to 1 of the buffet restaurants at the city centre in Nottingham. We usually go to either Big Wok or May Sum. It seems like the guys like it better at Big Wok instead of May Sum whereas Sara & I had another opposing opinion. We prefer May Sum instead.

A buffet costs around GBP6.00 – GBP6.50 and it’s all you-can-eat buffet, so it’s best to go there with an empty stomach to fully utilise what you’ve paid for. Being very Malaysian, it’s one of our culture to eat like : If you pay GBP6.50 for a buffet meal, you just got to eat the amount of food that’s more than GBP6.50 and if not, you won’t leave the restaurant. (Lim, 2008). Hahaha.

On 19/10/2008, we went to Big Wok (again) :

 

My 1st round : I had sweet & sour pork, char siew with egg fried rice, fried brocolli, long beans, cabbage (ahh finally, some chinese styled vegetables!) and black bean with beef.

At the end of the day, I kinda regret cause I didn’t go for another round or two for the main meals (like the first few pictures above). I should have. Haha. Anyway, the glutton-ness in me cause me a mild diarrhea the next day. Hee hee. Okay, I shall promise myself next time that I ought to go for at least 5 main meals before hitting on the dessert & extras.

The last resort...

If you're really really hungry, too lazy to go out and buy food, and you're just too lazy to cook instant noodles, rice and all that... and you have extra money to spare...

You can always call for Pizza Hut's delivery. Just simply dial Pizza Hut's number and in 20 minutes or 30 minutes time.. taa daa! Your food is right at your doorstep. All you need to do is just dial Pizza Hut's number, and watch some TV shows while waiting.

This is what happened during summer break in June. Feeling very hungry after my evening nap, and feeling like eating Pizza Hut, but not the pizza... I had these instead : Spaghetti Olio, Spaghetti Carbonara, Pepsi and Coleslaw. It costs me RM22 for dinner alone at home.

Truthfully speaking, tastewise, lacks of it. The cabonara was only ok. Just passed the margin of ok-only. The olio was very dry, but the prawns are big though. The coleslaw's so-so. But I prefer KFC's coleslaw more than this.

So honestly speaking, only attempt to order this to satisfy your growling tummy and if you have extra cash to spare and also, if you don't really mind the taste.

Today is Deepavali!! Mayb the moment u reading this entry, it is one week ago~ lols… anyway! Happy Deepavali to everyone!!

I bet most of u heard of Ah-Xian in Astro AEC. In one of those episode, he Highly recommended this restaurant to us! Inspired by him, thus i visited this restaurant today~
Following the map given by his website, we managed to find it easily. Traffic was super jam jus now!! =.=

When i reached there, *OMG! reli that nice mer??!!* SO MANY PEOPLE Q-ing there!!!!

BELIEVE IT!!!

After a 5 to 10 minutes wait, we manage to find a table which is jus right beside the counter. hmm… funny thing is, there are 2 counter  preparing Cha Siu, that 2 aunty keep on SCREAMING! as in they talk VERY LOUD! sth like: “TABLE ONE BILL, FASTER CLEAN THE TABLE!!, MARI SINI MARI SINI!!! ITU ANDKAT MALI ”  evione was laughing that time.. lols…

 

we were jus lucky to find a place! Other peoples like them… have to keep waiting outside the restaurant… U WONT BLIV UNTILL U SEE THE PHENOMENA URSELF!!

My brother felt that rice wasn’t that nice in terms of  quality. I deeply understand this because their business jus rocketed right after they came out in AEC.

hmm… one thing i wanna say is : always dun expect so much from anything! haha… it doesn’t really taste that PERFECT as ah-xian said. Undeniable, their pork is slightly softer than what i normally had, but it didn’t give me any good impact! SIGH, mayb i shouldn’t have expected that much! =( :: rm20 *wtf*
Averagely 10+ pieces in a plate.. so… rm2 per pieces??

i can confidently that my own-made cha xiu totally comparable !! haha…

p/s : i found this so called Cha xiu master is charging an inappropriate price. It is a little bit pricy already, do not giv any excuses like oil price gone up, inflation gone up and bla bla bla… that is because i knew the actual cost of making an cha siu. 6 of us, absolutely agree that we WONT come back next time.

Why my creamy salmon penne pasta sucked big time!

Hello folks! It’s been quite sometime since I last criticized about food right? Well, the <strike>bitchiness in me</strike> struck again!

This is what I had for lunch on Monday. What you see above is boiled cabbage with a touch of butter, fried potato slices and creamy salmon penne pasta. You must be thinking = WAH!!! So nice! So nice! Must be delicious!

Unfortunately, ONLY the potatoes are OKAY.

Let me start of with the boiled cabbage. The cabbage was OVERBOILED, tasteless even though with a touch of butter or somesort.

Secondly, let me move on to the creamy salmon penne pasta. It’s totally tasteless. Serious. Tasteless. I can’t believe it. Salmon pasta ruined just like that.

I tried my best to finish half of the salmon pasta and had a few mouthfuls of the cabbage, and finished half of the potatoes.

& I think the chef’s mood on Monday wasn’t good at all…

Cupcakes

Some of the wordings are smeared cause I accidentally dropped 1 of the cupcakes on top of the cupcakes. Haha

Cupcakes are the in trend replacing traditional birthday cakes these days. Last September, twas my mom's 4_ birthday. Rather getting her a birthday cake, I planned to get her something unique, like cupcakes. (must "sek cho" a bit cause I got a Nikon DSLR a few days before). Haha just jokin'.

At a very reasonable price, you can get very nice cupcakes. Do have a look at them. I bet you'll want to get yourself some cupcakes even though there's no celebration or anysorts. Just to have it for fun and to eat.

I ordered 49 mini cupcakes with 10 sugarpaste designs, and for the 49 mini cupcakes, its a random of 3 flavours - vanilla, american chocolate and cuppacino. It costs RM80 for all that. I ordered the cupcakes 2 weeks earlier before mom's birthday, and collected it on the day itself.

Indian Fine Dining

Have you tried Indian Fine Dining before? Yesterday night was my first experience of Indian Fine dining in my whole life! Usually, for dinner, we have normal western food but yesterday night was special cause we had our Hall Formal. Do go here to read more about my hall formal as I'm too lazy to be talking about the same thing twice.

NO! It's not our MAIN MEAL! Haha I'd faint if it really is our main meal!

The effort to make it fine dining style, the settings, decorations, the food... well.. we're served HOT and not cold plate dishes, the indian ice cream is nice with its touch of mango taste, and it's very different from the normal ice creams that we use to have, and imagine us yesterday having dinner during the beginning of winter! Haha. The lamb well, I find it a big too sweet to my taste, and overall it's okay, at least the rice with spices is well cooked, but I find the naan bread a bit too hard, the pappadam is excellent - even better than the ones I used to have in various indian restaurants in Malaysia, the appetizer, it's not bad, up to my liking and the teaser meal, chicken tikka was nice, reminds me a lot of tandoori chicken + satay. Lastly, we have indian kuih-muihs too, but I did not take pictures of it unfortunately and it's not that nice anyway. I find the taste a bit weird.

Overall, the food is not bad, I'll give it a 8.0/10

Thai street foods

When one mentions about amazing Thailand, automatically, the word TOMYAM pops up in one's mind. The equation goes like this : Thailand = Tomyam.

Let's ignore the equation of Thailand = Trannies and focus on FOOD. Haha.

Today, I'm going to talk about Thai street foods, in Haadyai. Haadyai is located at somewhere at the South of Thailand. It's only about 3 hours + drive from Penang, and about 1hour+ drive from Kedah. Near right? It's relatively nearer than from Penang-KL drive which on average, takes 4 hours.

Here are some food that I would recommend you all to try when you're in Haadyai. Haadyai is not big actually, it's just a town, and its usually concentrated on a few roads/streets. It's not that big actually, so a stay of 2 days would be able to cover Haadyai.

Have you seen the commercial of Pierce Brosnan & Zhang Ziyi in a Tuk-tuk? Click here if you haven't! LOL. It's a funny one.

Travelling around the town of Haadyai is actually not much of a problem cause as you can see, there's Tuk-Tuk's everywhere at your disposal. Usually, a ride costs (2-4 bahts/RM0.20-0.40 per person) if you're too lazy to walk.

I know some of you think that street foods are unhygenic. Well, it all depends on the condition of the stall and area, and also your tummy's tolerance for street food. Haha.

During one of my visits to Haadyai, I saw a few stalls selling fried insects. Yes. Fried insects and I'm sure some of you would have heard of it. It's very, very cheap. Normal insects like cockroaches, worms, beetles costs 10Baht (approx. RM1) for a packet. For more exotic insects like scorpions, grasshoppers, etc, it costs 20Baht (approx. RM2) for a packet.

I actually have my own pictures of the fair, and the stalls selling fried insects, but sadly enough, one time, my external hard drive crashed and I lost my that trip's pictures with exotic bugs. Yes, you might have guessed it right, I only took pictures and I DID NOT TRY THEM OUT. Pleaseeeeee, no insects and bugs for me!

This is 1 of the famous soya bean + mini yao za guai's added. It's only available at night, at 1 of the streets in Haadyai. It's very cheap, as it costs only (10-15 baht/RM1.00-1.50 per bowl)


Sorry for my ignorance, but this is the stall that sells yummy yummy soya bean + mini yao za guai. I do not know what the street is called and I do not speak Thai.


However, if you're interested, this stall is located right opposite this place. Hahaha. Interesting shop sign right? LOL. Think dirty. LOL LOL. It's a massage parlour I think...

I've been to Haadyai for quite a number of times - usually for a day, or two, and all ... just to eat! So I'm pretty familiar with the places, where to go, and where to eat and all. Who knows, perhaps we can organise a OnlyFoodie makan-makan trip during summer break!
